Jesus, The Suet of The World

It seems that in my Torah Portion studying for last week and again this week as well as in MyDailyBible app devotional reading the word “fat” comes up often. So often that it seems like every other verse is about fat in the offerings. Today I decided to study about fat.

There are a few Hebrew words in the Bible used for fat but one of them appears only 3 times,

As you can see in Mr Strong’s definition, this fat is suet.

I learned that “Suet” is a special kind of fat found only around the internal organs of an animal. It looks like this,

This fat is used in making the most delicious pastries, puddings, breads and even the best candles. A common word for this particular fat is tallow, does that ring a bell?

You can make candles from other hard fat found in meat and use it in baking or cooking but your house will smell like you’ve been grillin’ some steaks. Or your delicious pastries will taste like you’re chewing them along with a bite of steak.

So it’s easy to get why my title says “Jesus is the “Suet” of The World.” This 2 minute video is about tallow candle making.

In the video the woman says, “it puts off a nice bright light but gives off no smell.”

But to God, this choiest of fat gave off a “sweet savour.” Nothing impure gets past the “smell test” of our Heavenly Father.

Leviticus 3:3-5
And he shall offer of the sacrifice of the peace offering an offering made by fire unto the LORD; the fat that covereth the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards, [4] And the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away. [5] And Aaron’s sons shall burn it on the altar upon the burnt sacrifice, which is upon the wood that is on the fire: it is an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

The 3rd and last time this “Suet” fat is referred to in the Bible is in Leviticus chapter 8,

Most of the other times the word “fat” comes from this Hebrew word,

As you can see by the definition, it is still referring to the “richest, choice part, the best!!!” That’s what God still expects from His people. He desires we put our “best effort” in learning His Ways, His Word, of His Lovingkindnesses,” and even about His Holiness, Justice and Righteousness.

If we really desire to seek God with the same “Reckless Love” that He seeks us with, it won’t leave much room for anything else to occupy our emotions, thought life or life in general except what we need to survive in this world and love others as He Loves us. Looking back on some of the really crazy, “Reckless” things I’ve done in the name of love that were often nothing more than lust, it’s only by the Grace of God that I’m still alive to write of His “Reckless Love” for me.

Leviticus chapter 8 where “Suet” fat is used is about the ordination and consecration of Aaron and his sons to serve God as the priests for the people. They alone can bring the offerings for the people’s sins or peace “love” offerings to God. Thank God! We have a Great High Priest, Yeshua Jesus Christ to go to instead of the fallen men our day has to offer. Even the best of them fall far short of what ONLY Jesus Can DO.

Our Bible tells us though that we too are to be priests for ourselves, our homes and families,

Into “His Marvellous Light” as in being “In Christ Jesus.” He is the Greatest Light in a world of darkness. There is NO Middle ground. You can’t be a little in the dark and a little in the light. You can’t be neutral, a little bit for Jesus and still have strong desire for some of what the world offers. Setting our hearts desires on worldly things can quickly become an obsession if we’re not careful. We have to be consciously mindful to keep our flesh in check and walk out a “sold out for Jesus” life. That’s the picture, I like the pictures God’s Word draws in my head, Leviticus chapter 8 draws,

First you see in verse 23, the blood of consecration is on the “Right, ear, thumb and big toe.” The “Right” side of things in scripture refer to the “strength” or effort that’s put forth. Our greatest effort in living in this world must go to serving God. When God calls anyone out of “darkness” it is always done  with the intent that “they would serve” Him.

God doesn’t set anyone free from sin or gives them His Spirit for them to then go off and live a selfish, greedy life, just to see how much they can accumulate for themselves. A 5th car, $4,000 tennis shoes, a fleet of planes. All those things point to selfishness and greed in a world where so many live every day in hunger hoping someone would be moved with compassion to help them.

If you are “Serving God” you aren’t constantly looking for ways to “serve yourself. ” And if you are serving yourself before God then you’re really serving the devil. You ARE Gonna Serve Somebody. There isn’t a middle ground.

1 Corinthians 10:21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.

Take another look at

Leviticus 8:25-27  Then he took the fat and the fat tail, all the fat that was on the entrails, the fatty lobe attached to the liver, the two kidneys and their fat, and the right thigh; 26 and from the basket of unleavened bread that was before the Lord he took one unleavened cake, a cake of bread anointed with oil, and one wafer, and put them on the fat and on the right thigh; 27 and he put all these in Aaron’s hands and in his sons’ hands, and waved them as a wave offering before the Lord.

Have you ever heard the expression of when you got too much to do, “Having Your Hands Full?” This is the picture I see in my mind when I imagine Aaron and his sons hands filled with all these things. There’s NO Room for Anything Else. Their focus must have been on not dropping anything to the ground and causing it to be defiled and worthless to God.

Leviticus 7:19-20 “Flesh that touches any unclean thing shall not be eaten. It shall be burned up with fire. All who are clean may eat flesh, 20 but the person who eats of the flesh of the sacrifice of YHWH’s peace offerings while an uncleanness is on him, that person shall be cut off from his people.

Maybe you are starting to think, “Tony, get off the Old Testament thing and live with us in the New Covenant era. God isn’t in the cutting off His people business anymore.” OH, Really?

1 Corinthians 11:23-32  For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

Examine Yourself
27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

The “sleep” is not nap time. It is speaking of death, the long sleep. God Doesn’t Change!!! It would be a good thing to stop trying to separate the God of the Old Testament from the God of the New Testament. HE IS One and The Same. He didn’t mellow out in His Old Age, He Doesn’t AGE!!! He IS from Everlasting to Everlasting. This weeks Torah Portion reminds us of that,

Tsav | צו | “Command”
Torah: Leviticus 6:1 (6:8) – 8:36
Prophets: Jeremiah 7:21 – 8:3, 9:23(22) – 24(23); Malachi 3:4 – 4:6 (3:24)
Brit Hadasha: Mark 7:31 – 8:37, 12:28-34; Romans 12:1-2; 1 Corinthians 10:14-23

Malachi 3:6 “For I YHWH do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.

And the New Covenant tells us that too!!!

Hebrews 13:8  Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

What’s In Your Hands, Heart, Mind? Our Dear Heavenly Father God gave the Richest, Choicest, Finest, Best heaven has to offer in Jesus (John 3:16). What are you giving Him?

Chew on that fat for awhile.
