Lord, Teach Us To Pray

You would think the gospels would speak more of people asking Jesus how to pray. Oddly enough only once in the gospels is there a time when “one” asked.

Luke 11:1-2 KJV And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
Luke 11:1‭-‬2 KJV

Jesus is recorded in the gospels for praying very early and even all night.

Mark 1:35 KJV And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed

A theme that came up in Jesus’ prayers was “the Will of The Father” even in times of great anguish,

Luke 22:41‭-‬44 KJV And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

James, the brother of the Lord Jesus had a few hard words concerning self centered prayer,

James 4:1‭-‬3 NKJV Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.

There is an even worse thought on praying for something continuously for something God doesn’t want you to have. Yes Jesus taught this also about prayer,

Luke 18:1‭-‬5 NKJV Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, ‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’ And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’

Jesus teaches that if you don’t take God’s answer of NO and keep begging, He just might say Yes against His Will but it may cost you. Look at what Psalms 106 says,

Psalms 106:13‭-‬15 NKJV They soon forgot His works; They did not wait for His counsel, But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, And tested God in the desert. And He gave them their request, But sent leanness into their soul.

There’s been times in my life when God answered my prayer so quickly that it made me almost afraid to pray. Well put it this way, I realized that I better chose my words carefully. God answered a couple prayers a few days ago within a few hours but they were “safe” prayers. But first I’d like to tell about the prayers that really got my attention to choosing my words carefully.

Three times in the past 4 years or so I have had people really dear to me facing a doctors death sentence concerning cancer. For one of them I truly believe God dropped this enormous bundle of “Hope” in my heart. I can still remember exactly when it happened. The Archangel Phanuel is the angel that brings Repentance and Hope, maybe he paid me another visit.

I started praying fervently for her healing from the cancer. The doctor said that when they would remove her ventilator tube she probably would not have much time to live.

BUT GOD had different plans. One day, soon after I started praying for her healing I went up to the altar for prayer. I said, “I want you to agree with me that God would reveal to me everything in my heart that is not pleasing to Him.” Bishop Drew didn’t even know my name yet but his answer to me was, “God has shown me you are praying for an elderly woman. He”s heard your prayer and says He is going to heal her.”

To make a long story short, every time she went to the cancer doctor all he could say was, “I don’t understand, just be thankful you’ve had another holiday with your family.” Her quality of life had greatly improved and she really looked well. Her facial skin had life in it, no longer ashen grey.

After a couple years the cancer doctor said the cancer was becoming more active and was optimistic that radiation treatments could stop it this time but it didn’t. God didn’t drop another bundle of Hope in my heart. I’d pray for her but it was as though I was straining to think and say the words. Then one night, laying in bed a peace fell on me and I felt strongly led to pray this way, “Lord please be merciful to her and don’t let her or the family suffer and watch cancer take her life.”

The next day was a Sunday, some of her children came over for lunch. They said she was feeling good and ate well for lunch. She was sitting in a recliner talking with them when she coughed. Then pasted away suddenly.

The two other times were similar. After getting to the point of accepting that maybe it wasn’t God’s will to heal that person I prayed this way. “Lord if you are going to take them home with you, DON’T Let It Be By The Cancer. Take them some other way but don’t give the victory to cancer. And Lord please be merciful to them and don’t let them suffer.”

Those two times they passed away within a couple days of that prayer in a much more peaceful way than I’ve seen others suffer from cancer. I really believe God heard and answered those prayers because that IS God’s Heart and Will for His children.

Psalms 116:13‭-‬15 KJV I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord . I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

We MUST seek and desire to know the “Will of God.” When I became a Born Again with God’s Spirit Christian I had a hunger for Godly things. I stopped going the X-Rated book stores and started visiting the Christian books stores. I found this in those early years long ago but still cherish it.

That verse gave me a great thought for a prayer I’d pray often and still sometimes do. I knew very well the desires of my wicked heart had led me down some terrible and painful roads for myself and the people I loved the most. So I would pray this instead, “Lord please let the desires of your heart be the desire of my heart. Make them my own.” Honestly God has at times answered that prayer in ways that were very painful. Just a grain of sand sized piece of God’s heart longing for His children is crushing.

So a few days ago, kneeling in prayer before bedtime I said, “Lord let the desires of Your Heart be the desires of my heart.” Then I said, “Lord I hear people on Youtube say they ask You for a rapture dream and You give them one. I don’t want a rapture dream. I want to dream of worshiping You in Your presence and how wonderful that will be.”

I got in bed, turned on the Torah Portion scriptures for this week to listen to until I fell asleep. I Always put 30-40 minutes of scriptures to listen to when I go to bed. A few hours later I woke myself up singing, “We Cry Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lamb,” from the worship song, “We Fall Down” and crying in my pillow. I didn’t remember any part of the dream but thanked and worshiped Jesus for awhile and fell back asleep.

When it was time to get up, as I was sitting on the side of the bed this overwhelming thought came over me. “I so much desire that my people would tabernacle with me. I have done so much to make it possible.”

Thankfully it was a very very small and fine grain of sand sized desire of His Heart He let me feel. But it was still too much. God’s Word says He saves our tears in a bottle. I probably have a few.

I John 5:14-15 NKJV   Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.
